Each September, volunteers around the WORLD work together to clean beaches, rivers and other waterways. Volunteers document every piece of trash they find on standardized trash tally data cards. This information helps the Ocean Conservancy produce the world’s only state-by-state, country-by-country Marine Debris Index. By understanding sources of marine debris, we can work together to solve this problem.

Volusia/Flagler Surfrider will be participating in the International Coastal Clean-Up in 2 locations: The Crawford Road beach access in New Smyrna Beach and the Hartford Avenue beach access in Daytona Beach from 8am-10am on September 21, 2013. Please RSVP by August 28 with your preferred location and t-shirt size either on this event page or by emailing vicechair@volusia.surfrider.org. We will have passes to drive on the beach for everyone who volunteers, so you do not need to worry about parking.

In an effort to reduce the waste produced by the clean-up, please bring plastic shopping bags (to re-use for trash collection) and garden gloves (to reduce the use of plastic gloves)! Trash grabbers may be helpful but not necessary. Don’t forget to wear sun screen, comfortable clothing and shoes, and bring plenty of water!
