Come join us on Thursday, March 15 as we welcome the lengthening of the days! Summer is almost here…yay!

Where: Hartford Avenue Beach Approach, Daytona Beach
Date: Thursday, March 15
Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm

Weather permitting… the Surfrider Volusia-Flagler Chapter will be having a Monthly Chapter Meeting/Beach Clean-Up.

We’ll meet at the Surfrider flag at 5:30pm to talk about the upcoming Project BlueGreen Surf Contest/Festival on March 24th and 25th on the beach behind the Hilton.

We could still use some volunteers for this event and also for June’s Eco-Surf Clinic. Email vfsurfrider@gmail.com if you can help out!

We’ll briefly discuss our 2012 schedule and then get some (cigarette) butts off the beach!

NEW SMYRNA BEACH — There’s a new surf shop in town named Friction, and between the uncertain future of this town’s famed wave and the competition that wave has attracted, friction is something there may be plenty of for this new venture.

Many local surfers worry a pending U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ project to stabilize the inlet’s navigation channel by extending the south jetty also will cut the power off at a break widely regarded as one of the best on the East Coast.

Corps Project Manager Shelley Trulock said she doesn’t expect federal funding via a congressional earmark to come through for the project this or next fiscal year. Trulock also said the Department of Environmental Protection’s permit for the project has been extended through July 27, 2013. And, to lower costs, Trulock said, the extension has been reduced from 1,000 to 900 feet.

The Flagler Beach City Commission will discuss expanding the no-surf zone around the pier from 150 feet to 300 feet. The regular meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 105 S. 2nd St.

Extending the no surf zone to 300′ would have far reaching implications beyond simply creating a larger buffer between the fisherman and the surfers. Flagler Beach has been the breeding ground for some of the best surfers in the country all coming from our quaint city. That will change if the buffer zone is extended. The waves break the best closer to the pier and this is the sweet spot that allows the youth to become great athletes and helps to serve as a place for the youth and adults alike. It helps give the youth a place to express themselves, exercise (which nowadays is a feat in itself), and gives them a place to occupy there time instead of hanging in other areas. This buffer has sufficed for many years and should suffice for many more to come. Please re consider this un needed and damaging extension of the buffer zone.
